Plasmodium vivax & Plasmodium falciparum - mixed infection thick film - note very delicate rings of P.falciparum and larger irregular trophozoites of P.vivax. Confirmation of this mixed infection must be done after examination of a thin film. Mixed infections can be missed because of the suppression of P. vivax by P.falciparum and the difficulty in determining the identity if only ring forms are present. A DNA probe for P.vivax was found very useful to detect such mixed infection by Boreham and Relf 1991 - see Bibliography. Accurate species identification is essential for correct treatment to be administered.
